What is VMware vSAN?

July 6, 2019

A virtual storage area network (vSAN) is enterprise-class, storage virtualization software that, when combined with vSphere, allows you to manage compute and storage with a single platform.

VMware vSAN aggregates local or direct-attached data storage devices to create a single storage pool shared across all hosts in the vSAN cluster.

vSAN eliminates the need for external shared storage, and simplifies storage configuration and virtual machine provisioning.

Using commodity x86 server components, vSAN-powered hyperconverged infrastructure lowers storage costs 40% or more versus traditional server and storage architectures.

There’s no need to deploy or maintain separate arrays and storage networking hardware with VMware vSAN.

Its policy-based management removes the burden of provisioning and modifying numerous LUNs and data services. With its consistency and flexibility, VMware vSAN architecture provides the simplest path from server virtualization to hyperconverged infrastructure and a true hybrid cloud architecture.
